Situation

Thailand’s agricultural system remains highly dependent on intensive soil disturbance, chemical inputs, monocropping, and production practices that often prioritize short-term productivity over long-term soil health. Soil degradation, declining organic matter, erosion, reduced biological activity, and declining water-retention capacity consequently increase production risks and weaken the resilience of agricultural landscapes and watersheds. 

Shift

Shift from conventional input-intensive agriculture toward living-soil and regenerative agriculture systems that rebuild soil organic matter, restore soil biological functions, improve water infiltration and retention, reduce dependency on external inputs, and integrate agricultural production with ecological regeneration. 

Advantage

Regenerative agriculture can simultaneously improve soil fertility, water efficiency, agricultural resilience, biodiversity, and long-term productivity while reducing soil degradation and strengthening the capacity of agricultural landscapes to function as part of the wider watershed system. 

Additional Structural Advantage

Establishing a national transition framework can connect soil-health standards, regenerative farming practices, farmer incentives, agricultural extension, research, markets, carbon and ecosystem-service mechanisms, and watershed restoration into a common transition architecture, allowing regenerative agriculture to scale beyond isolated demonstration farms. 

Implication

Agricultural land can progressively transition from a source of ecological pressure into an active component of watershed restoration and national ecological resilience, creating healthier soils, more resilient farming systems, and stronger long-term food and water security.
