Situation

Ecosystem management in Thailand remains largely driven by government agencies and project-based interventions, while local communities—who directly depend on and interact with forests, water, agricultural landscapes, wetlands, and coastal ecosystems—are not yet consistently positioned as long-term stewards within a national ecological management system. 

Shift

Shift from government-led ecosystem management toward community-based ecosystem stewardship, where communities become active partners in monitoring, maintaining, restoring, and sustainably utilizing local ecosystems within a clear national framework of rights, responsibilities, knowledge, and incentives. 

Advantage

Community stewardship creates continuous local presence and rapid response capacity, strengthens local ecological knowledge, improves maintenance of restoration areas, increases social ownership, and enables ecosystem management to continue beyond the timeframe of government projects and annual budgets. 

Additional Structural Advantage

A national community stewardship system can connect local ecological knowledge, community organizations, monitoring networks, restoration financing, ecosystem-service incentives, and government technical support into a scalable institutional architecture, transforming communities from beneficiaries of environmental programs into long-term custodians of ecological assets. 

Implication

Ecosystem restoration becomes a continuous social–ecological process embedded within local communities, creating a distributed national stewardship network capable of maintaining ecological recovery, reducing degradation, and strengthening the resilience of landscapes and communities simultaneously.
