Situation

Thailand’s watershed landscapes have experienced progressive disruption of the natural relationships between forests, soil, surface water, groundwater, and atmospheric humidity. Forest degradation, soil compaction, loss of wetlands and small water-retention areas, altered drainage patterns, and fragmented ecosystems reduce the landscape’s ability to retain, circulate, and gradually release water, increasing both drought and flood vulnerability. 

Shift

Shift from managing forests, water resources, and agricultural land as separate sectors toward restoring the forest–water–humidity cycle as an integrated ecological process, using forests, soil, wetlands, vegetation, and natural water pathways to rebuild landscape-scale water retention, infiltration, evapotranspiration, and moisture circulation. 

Advantage

Restoring the natural cycle can increase water infiltration and storage, improve soil moisture, sustain streamflow, reduce rapid surface runoff, moderate local microclimates, and strengthen ecosystem resilience across upstream, midstream, and downstream areas. 

Additional Structural Advantage

A national framework can integrate watershed hydrology, forest restoration, soil recovery, wetland conservation, landscape water retention, ecological corridors, and climate data into a single spatial management architecture, allowing restoration interventions to reinforce one another rather than operate as isolated projects. 

Implication

Forest restoration becomes more than increasing tree cover; it becomes a mechanism for rebuilding the country’s ecological water-regulation system, strengthening watershed resilience against drought, floods, heat, and increasingly variable rainfall.
